Visit the former Monfort salt warehouse and discover stories of salt-making, maritime heritage, and the rich cultural legacy of Slovenian Istria in a unique seaside setting.
Monfort Exhibition Space in Portorož is one of the few preserved former salt warehouses on the Slovenian coast. Together with the Grando warehouse, it represents an important reminder of the time when salt production was one of the key economic activities in Istria. The monumental stone building, constructed between 1858 and 1859, still bears witness today to the rich salt-making heritage and a way of life closely connected with the sea.
In the former warehouse, where up to 20,000 tonnes of salt were once stored, visitors today discover stories of traditional salt-making, trade routes, and the maritime development of the coast. The spaces of Monfort reveal the importance of salt through the centuries – from its influence on the economy of the Venetian Republic to the development of ports, warehouses, and trade during the Austro-Hungarian period.
Today, Monfort is an exhibition venue that connects cultural heritage, maritime history and contemporary content. Visitors can explore exhibitions on traditional shipbuilding, the development of water sports, and life by the sea and in the salt pans. The architecture of the warehouse itself offers a special experience – the impressive stone interior and wooden roof structure create the unique atmosphere of a former salt empire.
