The Walls of Piran – The story of a city through the centuries

The town of Piran has preserved its distinct medieval character to this day, forming a compact historic town centre surrounded by a defensive wall system.

The oldest part of the town is the Punta quarter. On the hill above it, a fortress was already built in the 10th century, serving as a refuge for townspeople in times of danger.

In the centuries that followed, the town could expand only towards the mainland, as the entire peninsula had already been built up. The imposing and monumental town walls are today complemented by seven preserved defensive towers, bearing witness to the strategic importance of the town.

Why you should not miss a visit to the Walls of Piran

Seven town gates: To this day, seven town gates have been preserved. In the past, they represented the only entrances and exits to the town. A walk through the historic town centre and the discovery of these gates offer an excellent opportunity to explore Piran’s hidden, magical corners.

The lighthouse on Punta offers a breathtaking view of the entire Bay of Piran, the eastern coast of Italy, and, on clear days, even the Julian Alps. Climb the lighthouse steps—where a lighthouse keeper lived as recently as the 1970s—and admire Piran and its walls from a truly unique perspective.

A walk along 3 towers: More than 300 metres of the original town walls have been preserved, along with 13 towers and seven town gates, which once formed the only access to the town. Today, many sections of the walls are closely interwoven with Piran’s modern urban fabric, creating a unique blend of past and present.
